Respecting the American Flag
The U.S. National Flag Code, first established in 1923 and enacted into Public Law in 1942, provides guidance on the proper display and respectful treatment of the United States flag. While the Flag Code is not punitive, it reflects long-standing traditions meant to honor the flag and what it represents.
At Patriotism4Americans, we proudly sell American-made flags, and we do not support or condone the use of our flags in ways that cause damage, degradation, or disrespect. Our flags are crafted to be flown with pride, dignity, and care.
To help preserve the integrity of the flag, the following principles should be observed:
- The flag should not be displayed outdoors during severe or damaging weather unless it is specifically designed for all-weather use.
- The flag should never be used for advertising purposes, nor embroidered or printed on items such as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or disposable goods.
- The flag should not be worn as apparel, nor used as bedding or drapery.
- The flag should never be displayed upside down, except as a recognized signal of extreme distress or grave danger.
- The flag should never touch the ground, water, merchandise, or any object beneath it.
- When displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union (blue field) should always be uppermost and to the flag’s right, which is the observer’s left.
- When displayed in a window, the flag should be positioned the same way, with the union to the observer’s left when viewed from the street.
- Only clean, damage-free flags should be displayed.
- Flags that are dirty, ripped, frayed, faded, or excessively wrinkled should not be flown. When a flag is no longer fit for display, it should be retired in a dignified manner.
- The U.S. flag should be allowed to flow freely in the wind or indoor space, symbolizing liberty and openness.
- Flags should be displayed upright using a proper staff and finial. We discourage display methods that confine, clamp, or distort the flag merely to attract attention.
- When displayed on a vehicle, proper mounting—such as to an antenna or right fender—is acceptable only if the flag is secured correctly and not subjected to damage.
- When displayed with other flags, the U.S. flag should be placed first, centered, and higher, unless displayed with other national flags of equal status.
- Patriotic bunting is an appropriate alternative for decorative purposes, especially during holidays such as Independence Day, and helps avoid misuse of the flag itself.
Our mission is to provide high-quality, American-made flags meant to be flown with honor. Respecting the flag protects its meaning—and preserves the values it stands for.
